About K9s For Heroes
K9s For Heroes is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded by veterans and animal lovers who understand how deeply a dog can impact a life. Our mission is to empower veterans and their family members struggling to live independently by giving them the companionship of a rescue dog and providing professional basic obedience training for the dog and veteran. Each companion dog is rescued from a shelter, professionally trained to be a great companion, and placed with a qualified individual at no cost—funding provided entirely by public donations.
Why We Exist
- Many veterans return to civilian life with physical and emotional injuries, that make daily life and family relationships challenging.
- Families often shoulder the caregiving burden and need support as well.
- Last year in the U.S., approximately 2.9 million dogs entered shelters; approximately 607,000 were euthanized. K-9s For Heroes works to reduce those numbers by matching rescued dogs with veterans and families who will provide love, stability, and purpose.
What We Do
- Rescue dogs from local shelters and provide initial medical care, rehabilitation, and temperament evaluation prior to placement.
- Deliver a structured Companion Basic Training Program to prepare dogs for placement as companions.
- Place trained companion dogs with qualified veterans and family members to promote independence, emotional stability, and improved quality of life.
- Provide adoption fee, obedience training, initial veterinary care, and placement which are covered by donations.

Our Long-Term Vision
Our long-term goal is to acquire a dedicated facility in Northeast Florida — a building with land that will house our training facility and our administrative offices.
How To Apply
Veterans and eligible family members interested in receiving a companion dog must submit the K-9s For Heroes Companion Application package, which includes:
- Completed Application
- Copy of DD-214
- An interview (in person or by phone)
Get Involved
Support our mission by donating, volunteering, or offering free or discounted professional dog obedience training. Together we can save lives—both human and canine—and give veterans and their families the companions they deserve.
Our lifelong program is provided to Heroes at no cost and is designed to deliver maximum benefit with minimum administrative costs. We are proud that generous supporters trust us to do the right thing with their contributions, and we have received widespread support.
