Our Mission
K9s For Heroes is a 501(c)3 organization founded by veterans and animal lovers who know how much a dog can touch a person’s life. Our mission is to empower veterans and their family members suffering from mental or emotional disorders, to live independently with the companionship of a professionally trained dog that we’ve rescued from a shelter. These companion dogs will be trained and placed with each qualified person, at no expense to the individual. The cost will be covered by donations received by K-9s For Heroes from the public.
Why We Do It
Veterans and animal lovers who want to help veterans and their families while saving the lives of sheltered dogs started K-9s for Heroes Inc.. As Americans we owe our veterans a huge debt of gratitude for their bravery and sacrifices to protect the freedom of Americans. We also can’t forget the sacrifices that the veterans’ families have made, such as caring for the veteran’s children, pets, homes, etc. Many veterans return to civilian life with physical and emotional injuries that make it difficult to impossible to transition back to the civilian life they once knew. This transition takes a toll on the family of these veterans as well, as they are typically the sole caretakers for the veteran when they return from their tour of duty. Several veterans suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and this mental illness not only affects the veteran but also puts a huge mental and emotional strain on the family of that veteran.
Last year in the U.S. there were 2.9 million dogs that enter shelters. 607,000 of those are euthanized and 2 million are adopted or returned to their owners. K9s For Heroes wants to save as many of these dogs as possible by finding a loving forever home for them that will provide them with the love, companionship and stability that they so deserve.
Our goal is to help the veteran or family member to regain a life of independence, and to save the lives of dogs in shelters by partnering them together for a happy life together.
Donations
With the help of our friends and supporters, we use the donations to rescue dogs from shelters and help veterans to live an independent life by finding the perfect match of dog and veteran. After we’ve successfully paired the veteran with a suitable dog, the donations also provide basic obedience training for the veteran/dog team
Win – Win
K9s for Heroes does not believe in hiring professional fundraisers. We will not out-source the fundraising to professional for-profit companies who keep most of your donations. We would rather offer the job to out-of-work veterans and Americans here in Florida.
Our Goal
Our goal is to save as many sheltered dogs and help as many veterans as we possibly can.
K-9s For Heroes, with the help of our friends and supporters, would like to acquire a building with land in northeast Florida that will house the training facility for the Companion Basic Training Program and our administrative offices.
Our long-term goal is to also offer grooming and boarding services at the facility at discounted rates for veterans and military families.
Who Is Eligible?
Each recipient of a K9 companion must be able to solely care for a dog. Recipients will be provided the basics they will need to start life with your new best friend.
